The Enemies of the Thundercats

Mumm-Ra and Ma-Mutt

(Mumm-Ra voiced by Earl Hammond, Ma-Mutt voiced by Robert McFadden when he "speaks")

Mumm-Ra and Ma-Mutt       Mummy Mumm-Ra

Mumm-Ra is the main villain of the series.  He's an ancient Egyptian mummy with a bad attitude and a killer sense of humor.  He works for the Ancient Spirits of Evil, who change him from his wimpy decayed corpse form into a huge, muscular blue guy with sharp teeth in a cape, miniskirt, and fur-lined shoes (okay, so they aren't the "ancient spirits of fashion sense"!)  He's an expert at black magic and uses it to try and defeat the Thundercats, who prevent him from ruling Third Earth in ultimate evil.  Ma-Mutt is his ghostly dog.  He's faithful to his undead master, even though Mumm-Ra treats him like crap (although he did apologize to him (if you can imagine it!) at the end of Ma-Mutt's Confusion).  Ma-Mutt can change forms and imitate other living beings to trick them.  Mumm-Ra often uses him for such dirty work.

The Mutants

These guys came from the planet Plundarr to try and steal the Eye of Thundera, but Mumm-Ra trapped them on Third Earth by sinking their ship under the sands of the desert so they'd be forced to stay and work for him.  They live in Castle Plundarr, the base they built on Third Earth.

Slythe

Slythe: (voice of Robert McFadden) He's the big green reptilian Mutant who draws out the "s" sound in everything he says.  He's the leader, probably because he's the only one who isn't intimidated by Mumm-Ra, has a lick or two of common sense (although that has been known to vanish on occasion *cough* Marvelous Merna *cough*), and can beat up the other Mutants if they get out of line.  He flies the Nose Diver.

Jackalman

Jackalman: (voice of Larry Kenney) He's the flunky of the group.  He's fairly wimpy, so he follows the brawnier and pushier Slythe, but he is sneaky and has a few moments of rebelliousness and independence, such as in Jackalman's Rebellion.  He usually flies a Skycutter unless he's turning tail and running away... which he does a lot.

Monkian: (voice of Peter Newman) Monkian is the dimmest bulb in the Mutant chandelier, so despite his impressive physical strength and agility he generally winds up going along with whatever Slythe suggests much like Jackalman does.  He did get ambitious in Monkian's Bargain, where he gained powers of his own and even managed to defeat Mumm-Ra, but the old mummy caught him with the fine print and victory was snatched from him at the last minute.  During the anointment trial episodes it's also implied that Monkian has made an independent friendly connection amongst one of the natives of Third Earth who tells him things about the Thundercats, one theory being that it's a rogue warrior maiden.  In battle he flies a Skycutter and he also has a shield that can spit mini cannon balls at enemies, which is the coolest hand-held weapon that any of the mutants have (Vultureman's miscellaneous spontaneously combusting inventions don't count!).

Vultureman

Vultureman: (voice of Earl Hammond) He's my favorite of the Mutants.  Vultureman is the scientist and inventor type of the group.  Technically I guess that means he should be the smartest, but for some reason he can't ever seem to invent anything that works for more than ten minutes, and while he is intelligent he seems to be lacking in the common sense department.  He's also the least loyal of the mutants and has been known to leave them to do things on his own (Vultureman's Revenge) or work with the Lunatacs (Thundercubs!).

Ratar-O: (Larry Kenney) He is a battle commander from Plundarr, who takes over leadership of the Mutants whenever he shows up.  Needless to say, Slythe doesn't like him very much, especially when he points out how the reptilian used to be a cook under his command.  He flies a ship called the Rat-Star and fights with two magical sais.  His ancestor Ratilla held the Sword of Plundarr, implying that Ratar-O is descended from Plundarrian royalty or at least warrior nobility.  He only appears in a few episodes (Feliner Part I and II, Fond Memories, and Thundercats Ho!)

The Lunatacs

This group of villains is my favorite, in case you haven't been able to tell that from elsewhere on my site already.  Simply put, the Lunatacs rule!  This band of rogues originated from the various moons of Plundarr before they wound on Third Earth working for Mumm-Ra.  At one point they managed to tick him off and he punished them by sealing them up in molten rock.  In Mumm-Ra Lives! he decides that the Mutants need some help defeating the Thundercats so he orders them to free the Lunatacs.  Once released they built their mobile fortress Skytomb and took up residence in Third Earth's DarkSide.

Luna

Luna: (voice of Lynne Lipton)  Luna is the leader of the Lunatacs. She comes from the third moon of Plundarr.  She's really short and has big striped hair.  Her voice is high-pitched and screeching, and her favorite pastimes seem to be telling the other Lunatacs what to do and hollering at them when they don't do it to her satisfaction.  The only reason they put up with her all her crap is Amok, who will beat them senseless if they don't.  I am in the vast minority in that I actually like Luna.  Many fans hate her with a passion, but I think she's pretty cool, and have been able to imitate her voice on occasion.

Amok

Amok: (voice of Earl Hammond) Amok is Luna's big dumb bodyguard and her opposite in that he's all brawn and no brains.  He carries her around and asks for nothing in return aside from companionship and candy.  He's very loyal to Luna for some unknown reason, and he puts up with a lot of abuse from her, even though she doesn't seem to appreciate him much.  In Mumm-Rana's Belt, when Luna gained normal height and added power, she dismisses him saying she doesn't need him, but he does get even with her for that, showing that his patience is indeed finite.  Amok rarely talks, and instead generally sits there and grunts out one or two word sentences if he has something to say.

Alluro

Alluro: (voice of Doug Preis) Alluro is my absolute favorite character from Thundercats.  This Lunatac has the most awesome power of all of them: the power to make others bend to his will.  All he has to do is use his psyche club and BAM!  You gotta do whatever he says.  He is also a scientist and tinkers with inventions, much like Vultureman, and has a huge ego.  His voice is also rather charming, classy and snooty, and a nice contrast from Luna's.  And no, I was not hypnotized to write this glowing review of his character!

Chilla

Chilla: (voice of Gerianne Raphael) Chilla has the power to exhale ice that can freeze her victims solid, as well as the power to shoot fire beams that can defrost them again.  She has her own vehicle that she can summon when she wants to by touching the crescent moon on her chest.  Unfortunately for the Thundercats (and sometimes the Mutants or other Lunatacs), she's also arguably the meanest of the group.  She comes from the second (ice) moon of Plundarr.

RedEye

RedEye: (voice of Earl Hyman) This Lunatac's big red eyes allow him to see clearly in pitch black surroundings, and see Tygra when he's invisible.  Needless to say, he gets stuck on watch duty a lot!  His weapon is called the Sidewinder, and he can also shoot electrical beams at his enemies from his chest plate.  His home moon of Plundarr is very dark, which is what gives him his extraordinary vision powers.  In one episode he also had a staff weapon called a Pacifier.  Despite his useful powers, RedEye got less airtime and speaking lines than the other Lunatacs.  (He probably had the same agent as Pumyra.)

TugMug

TugMug: (voice of Earl Hammond) TugMug is a short, round, mohawked Lunatac with a cybernetic spring-loaded lower body instead of legs.  (Some of the more warped minds in the Thundercats circles have made cracks about a "fourth piston", but let's not go there!)  His home moon has very high gravity, explaining his short stature and extraordinary strength on worlds with regular gravity.  His primary weapon is a gravity carbine that can trap an enemy in either a very high or low gravity field that will either pin them down so that they can't move or float helplessly in the air.
